From Warwick to the Lake District

June 13, 2010
We left Warwick and headed to the Lake District about 200 miles north of Warwick. The motorway was an excellent choice and we made good time. Once we neared the area, the roads suddenly got a lot smaller and a lot more turns and hills to negotiate. We passed through the villages of Windermere and Ambleside on our way to Grasmere. What a picturesque little village Grasmere is, nestled in the hills and lakes of the area. Our hotel is the Swan hotel and is within walking distance of the village. (Yes, uphill and downhill and uphill again!)
In this “neck of the woods” the sun rises at 4:30 in the morning and sets at about 10:30 at night. Makes for a long day but does leave more time to explore the countryside. Everyone here seems to be a hiker and half the shops sell hiking gear. Well our hiking is limited to going from the hotel to the village and back.
We are spending 2 nights here and will continue our exploring of the Lake District tomorrow.
